At Union Urging, FCPS Recognizes Juneteenth Holiday for ALL School Employees!

Today, the Superintendent made the very fast-paced decision to grant the Juneteenth holiday to all school employees tomorrow, June 19.  At FEA’s suggestion, based on our members urging, the school system leadership made the right decision to extend the holiday to all employees.  This is effective immediately and not awaiting for future calendar planning.  We join all employees in applauding FCPS for this bold decision-making.

Please see Superintendent Brabrand’s email excerpts below:

“While we have taken steps toward creating an inclusive and compassionate environment, there is clearly much more work to be done. So today, as a step on that journey, I am announcing that FCPS will observe Friday, June 19, as an official holiday for FCPS employees, in recognition of Juneteenth. For those of you who may be unfamiliar, Juneteenth is the celebration and commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. It is observed annually on June 19.  Earlier this week, Gov. Northam declared Juneteenth as a state holiday and the county has made a similar declaration for their employees.

“Additionally, the School Board will pass a resolution today at their business meeting acknowledging the historical significance and importance of Juneteenth.

“I encourage each of you to use tomorrow as a time for reflection and learning. It is only through our collective efforts that we can help break the chain of systemic racism in our community. Together, we will create an environment where diversity in all of its forms is valued and appreciated.”

Thank you, FCPS School Board and Dr. Brabrand!
