FCPS Faces a Cyber Attack

Dear FEA Members,

FEA has been closely monitoring a breaking situation in FCPS. You may have seen the recent story concerning hackers breaking into the FCPS network.  FCPS has also sent an email follow up to the community earlier this evening.

FEA has been looking into this matter since it was brought to our attention late this morning.  We are working closely with FCPS Leadership to make sure all appropriate steps are being taken to keep data secured.

This ransomware issue is concerning and FEA is thankful that the FBI and other experts in this type of crime have been involved.  We believe that FCPS is doing the best they can to protect student and staff information.  We also believe that FCPS employees, students and families need to know sooner rather than later if their information is compromised.

We will do our best to keep you informed as this situation evolves.

Please enjoy some rest this weekend. You all have earned it.

Dear FCPS Community and Staff,

FCPS recently learned that ransomware was placed on some of our technology systems. We are taking this matter very seriously and are working diligently to address the issue.  We currently believe we may have been victimized by cyber criminals who have been connected to dozens of ransomware attacks in other school systems and corporations worldwide. We are coordinating with the FBI on the matter.

At this time, our investigation of the issue is ongoing and we are working diligently to determine the impact of this incident on FCPS data.   We have retained leading security experts to help us determine the nature and scope of the incident and recover from the situation.

FCPS is committed to protecting the information of our students, our staff, and their families. We will work with law enforcement to the fullest extent to prosecute any individuals or groups that attack our systems.
